It's APPLE SEASON!!  (Posted 30/04/10)

May is nearly here, it's getting cooler and darker and many of the summer fruits have finished and it's time to look forward to autumn seasonal fruits and veggies.  Prue's magnificent Smyrna Quinces from Yarra Glen have started.  Apples in the shop:  Royal Gala, Red Dels, Golden Dels, Fuji, Grannies and Pink Ladies.  Sundowners will be available mid to late May. Pears are well underway with - Buerre Bosch, Howell, Packham and Red D'Anjou Pears are all available.  Fresh Blackberries, blueberries and Raspberries are all finished.  Local Yarra Valley berries are available frozen until next season.  Local Strawberries are still available although the colder weather is slowing them down.  Stonefruit has completely finished.

It's now time for citrus with Imperial Mandarins and Mildura Navel oranges just starting.  We wait until the navels are tree ripened, not gassed.  Our first navels are so juice and very flavoursome.  $1.80 kg or $3.99 for a 3 kg bag.

Figs are slowing down now, as soon as the frosts arrive they will finish.  New Seasons Chestnuts have been beautiful from Trentham near Daylesford.  They are magnificient in size and quality.  The variety is our favourite - Marrone.  Very creamy.  Field tomatoes are still going, and local veggies - Brussel Sprouts from Adam's farm up the road are underway.  Unfortunately our local garlic stocks have run out, so now we have to source from elsewhere.  Sadly this year the harvest of heirloom pumpkins is a non event.  Christine advises a lack of water in November is to blame with low germination.  She has a handful of pink banana pumpkins, couple of potkins and some gourds so we are really sad to hear this.  Hopefully next year, as Chris is very passionate about the heirloom pumpkins.
